Day's Out in the area

The brightness of the sky in the Cote d'Azur has long attracted Artists and there are many famous and beautiful Towns and Villages to explore.  Have a look at the famous places below.

Frejus: Monte-Carlo: Monaco Grand Prix: Cannes (Film Festival)St Raphael: Verdon Gorge Lac de St Cassien:   Feyance   St Tropez

Frejus

About fifteen minutes drive from the Holiday Green campsite, Frejus was occupied by the Romans and some of the original Roman Architecture remains to this day.

For lovers of antiquities, see the old Aquaduct system and a Roman Amphitheatre. The Amphitheatre does still get used on infrequent occasions for Bullfights, but there is no cruelty to the Bulls I am assured which makes such a sport more palatable.    Nearby  to the Amphitheatre on a Saturday morning is an "Arab Market" which you can find many bargains such as cloths and leather goods. It is very popular.

For Sun worshippers the sandy Beach is set in a lovely bay and a new Promenade has just been completed. The "Plage" is a short distance from the Town Square but it is well signposted.

For the kids there is a Skateboarding & Rollerblading park at the "Bas Nature de Frejus" This is a substantial play area with a state of the art Rollerblading or Cycling track of 8km circling around the football pitch and a wide open space.  The Skateboarding park has mini ramps, half pipes, grinds and other things to keep Teenagers happy. There is also a smaller Skateboard park for the very young "beginners".

Park up at "Bas Nature" and there's an excellent walk along the beach, passing a Chateau which is Ministry of Defence owned and its perimeter fence, turning right and along a small water inlet, finding yourself eventually onto the Road to St Tropez. Turn right again and just after the Geant Superstore right gain will bring you back to the Bas Nature du Frejus. A square walk of about four miles I would guess and an enjoyable way to keep fit. There is also a naturist beach somewhere in Frejus and certainly one at St Maxime I am told. The Frejus beach is called the "Venus" beach, not that I have a clue where it is. Sorry!

I

f you are eating out in the evening try Le Pouvrier - its a small Restaurant under a Roman Arch found right at the back of the photo above in the two linked Town Squares. The Ostrich steak is delicious.  If you want to go more up market and experience Nouvelle Cuisine, then the Hotel L'Arena is a friendly family run Hotel with a Car Park opposite seen in the photo below.

The newly developed Port of Frejus is host to many lavishly expensive marine craft and you will find more about the Marina elsewhere on this site.

Monte-Carlo

The Principality of Monaco is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in the world, the Capital has some of the most beautiful architecture and elegantly dressed people in Europe.

Famed for it's yearly hosting of the Grand Prix  there is much more to this vibrant city.

See the world famous Casino (pictured left) with it's magical gardens. Monaco  is one of the best places to spot some of the most expensive cars in the world!

Whether it's a Ferrari, Bentley, Mercedes (pictured right) Lamborghini or Roll's Royce that turns your head, there is plenty to see just cruising the streets of Monaco.

The Harbour area (hosts some of the most lavish and expensive sea going Craft that money can buy.

There is also an Oceanographic Museum celebrating the Mediterranean ocean and giving an insight into some of the weird and wonderful marine animals which make it their home.

Monaco Grand Prix

A great number of people visit the Principality of Monaco with one aim, just to drive round the famous Grand Prix circuit, past the casino, into the Rascasse" hairpin bend (pictured right) then down into the tunnel section by the  multi story Car Park. The circuit covers after various changes since 1929, a distance of some 3.367 km.

For one week of the year though, the roads are closed off and the circus which is Formula 1 rolls into town! The F1 events start on the 13th May and culminate on Sunday 16th May 2010 with the F1 Championship race.

The worlds top drivers battle it out with speeds up to 180mph on the narrow course.

This is one spectacle not to be missed.  California Blue Caravan at Holiday-Green is available to use as a base for your visit to Motor Sport's most prestige event, at a fraction of the cost of a Hotels lodgings or hiring a Villa. Board the TGV at St Raphael and enjoy the beautiful experience of seeing the Suns sparkling reflection on the Med as the journey cuts through Mountains and clearings. See the Yachts moored in the Lagoons.

Cannes / Film Festival

The Coast road from Frejus to Cannes leads you through some beautiful views of the Esterel Mountain range. Best views in that direction otherwise you are on the wrong side of the road to enjoy.

The Coastal City of Cannes is one of the most de rigueur places to visit at the moment. With it's private stretches of beach (pictured above) and Hotels such as the Carlton (below) it has a certain exclusivity and is a great place to spot the Celebs!

There's no time better for hanging out with the actors and actresses than during the "Festival de Cannes" which this year is held between 12th and the 23rd May 2010.

This is when the world's biggest stars of the silver screen turn out in force to celebrate the opening of new movies and to party in the warmth of the Mediterranean.

St Raphael

Another typically beautiful French town is St Raphael and the photo opposite was taken mid September 2003. (where have the years gone?)Being situated just one mile from Frejus almost linked to the ancient Town it looked just the same in September 2009.

St Raphael boasts beautiful promenades where you can dine alfresco, exclusive shops for those special gifts or just self indulgence.  St Raphael plays host to the "Festival De Jazz" in July. A "New Orleans" style festival celebrating this vibrant music.

The Town has a Fish Market area by the bay where you can buy freshly caught fish in the morning and the Marina hosts some lavish craft for those interested in Yachts and Cruisers.

Mandelieu

A Fortress sometimes occupied by Napolean (and possibly Josephine) in this pretty village with a cove Beach just before you reach Cannes along the Blue Route coast road.

Gorges du Verdon

For a simply SPECTACULAR day out, not to mention a hairy drive, why not visit Europes answer to the Grand Canyon - heres a link verdon gorge

If you are into White Water Rafting, rock climbing, and other equally challenging pastimes this place is for you.

It's a full day out, so I recommend you take a packed lunch. You'll find a Coolbag and Ice packs in the Caravan. The drive takes you from the Mountains to sea level and back. The striking aqua coloured water, wild herbs and natural waterfalls are beautiful. It can however be chilly, so take  a sweater.

if you go for the Pedalos make sure the wind is in the right direction for getting back or you'll end up feeling like a Mouse on a treadmill !

Just before the hairiest of switchbacks at the bottom of the mountains, if you carry on the road instead of turning upwards, you come to a pretty village with a wonderful Chateau and panoramic views. Sorry I can't recall the name.

Lac de St Cassien - water nearer to home and a Carp Fishermans' paradise

Sorry, I can't tell you when the fishing season in France starts or finishes, or what the rules are, but you may be able to find out using a good search engine. What I can tell you is that the Lake is beautiful and just fifteen minutes drive from the Caravan. it's nearby to the beautiful village of Feyance which is set on a hill top with magnificent views.

The Lake is a premier Carp lake but rules have changed in recent years because of the popularity of it and some control on night fishing was introduced. You may be able to hire boats and fishing equipment at the Lakeside and there is a picnic spot also.

Feyance

Climb the steep alleys in this quaint little Town and find a magnificent Church and at the very top,  a Belvedere. Take a Coffee at one of the small and pretty Cafes as you climb the alleys. Glider planes use the valley area in silent descent on occasions.

St Tropez

Can be frustrating to get to during the peak season as traffic clogs the road. Faster by Boat and they can be hired from Frejus or St Raphael.

Dont' miss out on a day or evening trip to this popular ex fishing village. Its a winding road along the coastline that can be beautiful with the night canopy of the Moon and Stars set over the Med, passing St Aygulf and St Maxime en route, St Maxime being worth a stopover as many eateries serving food to passers by are on the Street which runs parallel with the main road. There are Car parks up the side streets.

Alternatively, perhaps try the "Booze Cruise" as a way of getting there and enjoying some time without the worry of driving. Organised trips take place from the HG site.
